Banana Placemat
“It all started with my parents’ banana tree.”
In the beginning of this project I made the naive thought that I could extract the fibres from our banana tree in Crete and use them to make stuff. Little did I know though, so the orders from India kept arriving to make various sample tests on the qualities of the fibre.
Only 50 years ago, Cretan bananas were produced 10 times more than today but production in Arvi and other places keeps growing year by year. Unfortunately, although the fruit maintains its glory and sale, all the precious fibres from the old stems of the trees are thrown away.
Banana placemat imagines their use in a different way, while taking advantage of the sea-water resistance, fast drying properties and luxurious silkiness of the banana fibre.
